The thought of gynecology exams probably doesn’t conjure images of calm and comfort for most women. For some they are more than uncomfortable, they may be downright scary. If this sounds like you, try to dull your nerves with the following tips.
- Learn how your vagina and vulva work and how to identify each part.
- Research to find the right women’s health specialist for you.
- Write down everything. Questions, concerns, changes in how you feel and look down there. Sometimes when nervous we forget to mention things so write it down and bring it into your visit.
- Do more homework. check out the website of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, which lists many patient resources.
- At the appointment, remember to breathe. While waiting, try a relaxation technique, like progressive muscle relaxation. Slowly flex each muscle group for about five seconds and then release and relax them for about 30 seconds. Start at your toes and work up to your neck and head.
- Talk openly with your doctor. Speak up! If this is your first visit, the doctor will likely go through each procedure more slowly and with more explanation.
- Learn how to reconnect after the appointment. Ask what the best method is for contacting the doctor with questions and concerns after the appointment. Should you call? Email? Contact the office manager?
- Leave the gynecologist who makes you feel nervous. If your doctor made you uncomfortable during the appointment, by blowing off your concerns, not listening, rushing or seeming judgemental, drop that doctor and look for another. This is your health. So never settle.
